A ciastal footpath leading the way

Designed for Accessibility, Open to Everyone

Accessibility is not a label. It is about making spaces work better for more people.

Accessibility is not a label

When we created Our Bench, it was never about building something “special” for a small group of people. It was about building something that worked for as many people as possible.

We know what it feels like to plan a holiday around equipment, fatigue, dignity and worry. We know the quiet calculations that happen before a booking is made. We know the fear of arriving somewhere that “says” it is accessible, but is not, and we have experienced that first hand, and had to adapt on the spot, and made decisions not to go to protect family members cause access wasn't possible.

We built cottages that remove those worries. Step free access, accessible wet rooms that actually work, comfortable beds, space to move and room to breathe. If you want to see the details, you can explore our equipment and accessibility features.

“We’re not really disabled…”

We have lost count of how many enquiries begin like this: “I’m not disabled… not really… but...""

  • Someone is recovering from surgery
  • Arthritis makes stairs difficult
  • A parent wants everything on one level
  • Someone lives with a hidden condition
  • Someone is simply tired and needs things to be easier
  • They have a sight loss and need reduced tripping hazards
  • They have family / friend nearby - we have been recommended but there not sure we will accept them!

Sometimes people simply want somewhere clean, calm, well designed and easy to move around. Accessibility does not take anything away. It just removes barriers.

Our cottages do not feel clinical. Our beds do not “look medical.” Our toilets are standard. Our sofas are comfortable. Our kitchens are warm and welcoming. They simply work better for more people.

If this is a worry you have felt, you might also find our FAQs reassuring.

What if accessibility was normal?

We believe the world would be a kinder place if accessible design was not seen as “other.” Wider doorways, level thresholds, thoughtful layouts and clear information are not specialist luxuries. They are good design.

Not every need is visible. Not every need is permanent. Not every guest needs every feature. Accessible accommodation is not exclusive. It is inclusive.

Why this matters to us

Our Bench was born from lived experience. From watching someone you love struggle with a doorway that is too narrow. From realising that a single step can stop a holiday before it begins. From not being able to access a toilet and from not being able to sleep on the same floor as our loved ones, From understanding that dignity matters.

We also understand something else. We need guests, just like every other self catering business. We are a family run business in the New Forest that survives because people choose to stay with us.

So we welcome everyone who values what we have created. You do not need to use a hoist. You do not need a profiling bed. You do not need to tick a box. You simply need to want to stay somewhere designed with thought and care.

Come and see for yourself

Stay because you need specialist equipment. Stay because you prefer single level living. Stay because your friends are in a neighbouring cottage. Stay to try us out before bringing a loved one away. Stay because you want to meet someone who understands.  Or  just stay because you want a peaceful, well maintained place in the New Forest.
