South of England Disabled Accommodtion
One guest recently wrote to us while visiting the area again in remembrance of their Mum, and we wanted to share their story.
Their story
"My elderly Mum and I stayed a few times at Our Bench.
Around 2017 I spent ages trying to find disabled self-catering accommodation. The location was not too specific — anywhere in the South of England — which is quite a wide remit. Many places described as disabled accommodation merely had ramp access.
I was elated when I found your cottages, and even more so when I saw just how extraordinarily well equipped they were.
What also made a difference is that the cottages were so homely. Whilst the bedrooms and bathroom were understandably full of equipment, the kitchen and living room area were welcoming and warm in every sense.
We utilised the profiling bed and the space allowed the wheelchair to manoeuvre up to it. Previously I had to detach the electronic mattress and heavy battery pack and transport it to conventional self-catering accommodation.
The utter peace of mind that arose upon arrival — when you knew every need had been catered for — made such a difference.
The cottages were not only a godsend because of how well equipped they were, but because of the location. My Mum, due to physical and mental ailments, could no longer cope with journeys longer than the two and a half hours it took to travel.
Our last stay was unfortunately curtailed as my Mum became distressed as a result of her dementia.
I recall our time at Our Bench fondly. They were wonderful, special times in the last few years of a long, purposeful and unselfish life.
I write this on the eve of the anniversary, visiting the area in remembrance.
Thank you so very much.
Why stories like this matter
Accessible holidays are about much more than ramps or equipment. They are about independence and creating memories together while it is still possible, with everything you need to make that happen.
Many families travel with complex needs. Equipment such as profiling beds, ceiling hoists and accessible wet rooms can make the difference between a holiday being possible or impossible.
Stories like this remind us why Our Bench exists. They remind us that sometimes the most important thing we provide is peace of mind.
If you would like to share your own experience of staying with us, we would love to hear your story.
