Sam and his family inspired our changing table
Sam and his family helped shape lasting changes at Our Bench, beginning with their time staying in Bench Cottage.
Sam and his family stayed with us on at least six occasions. One of Sam’s first holidays was around 2017, when staying at Bench Cottage meant he could spend time with his grandparents who lived nearby in Milford on Sea. At the same time, his mum and dad had an accessible place to stay where Sam could rest comfortably and they could enjoy being together as a family.
As we got to know Sam’s mum, Penny, we discovered that she was an Occupational Therapist. Through conversations with her, we began to understand the benefits of adding a changing stretcher to the cottages. Penny helped us see how this would make a real difference for a young person like Sam, who had limited upper body control, and why it could be more suitable than a shower chair.
We sourced a shower stretcher but initially struggled to make it work in the space, as we had no prior experience. When Sam and his family stayed again, further conversations helped us understand where and how it could be best positioned in Bench Cottage. We made a few changes, including moving the toilet slightly, which allowed the stretcher to be fitted. The family were then able to use it on their next visit.
Sometimes it’s not about adding more equipment, but about understanding how a space really works for the person using it.

Over those visits, I was also able to capture some special memories of the family together, both in my photography studio and in the studio garden. Sam was an amazing young man who helped me realise that, with care and the right equipment, a mobile hoist could be used to transfer someone onto a swing or nest seat, allowing him to enjoy outdoor spaces in a different way. He also showed us just how important a changing stretcher can be, enabling him to shower safely and comfortably, in a way that truly met his needs.
Special memories
Sam showed us the importance of capturing holidays and special memories, including everyone in the photos, and those quiet moments with loved ones. He also showed us how simple conversations can truly make a difference. Sam inspired change and will always be deeply missed. We were devastated to hear that he passed away in early 2022, but we felt honoured that his family shared their experiences with us and trusted us to capture precious memories for them to treasure.
